It’s the second week in January and I’m finally ready to think about the new year ahead after recovering from the holidays! I spent all of last week returning, exchanging, unpacking, organizing, and cleaning! I’m exhausted! But I’m also excited for all that 2017 has in store for me. This is the time when so many of us pledge to make healthy changes, but often we get derailed without a solid plan in place. Healthy changes don’t have to be complicated, overwhelming, or extreme in order to be effective. My advice…keep it simple…it’s the only plan you really need! Here are a few simple things you can do to get a healthy start in 2017!
Hydration is foundational to optimal health – 55-60% of your total body mass is comprised of water. Proper hydration affects energy production, detoxification, and digestion. Early signs of dehydration include cravings, irritability, headaches, stiffness and muscles aches, fatigue, and anxiety. Before you worry about changing your eating habits, get in the habit of hydrating every single day! Half your body weight in ounces is the formula, and keep in mind that caffeine and sugary drinks are dehydrating. Herbal teas and seltzer count as water!
Eat More Veggies
Vegetables should be at the base of your food pyramid – regardless of your diet – Paleo, Whole30, vegan, vegetarian – it’s all about the veggies!!! Think about healthy fats and protein as the sides, with veggies transitioning to your main dish in 2017 – at every single meal!
Do Your Prep
Prep is crucial to staying on track in 2017. Simplify your prep to make it doable! Roasted veggies, hard boiled eggs, crudite, high quality protein, soaked chia seeds, frozen smoothie kits, and washed greens are some of the items I recommend to my clients to stock their fridges with. Ditch complicated recipes and opt for simple, straightforward ingredients that can be combined for quick, easy meals. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram for more food prep tips.
Swap Grains for Greens
Swapping grains for greens (or grain free alternatives) is a simple way to start making healthy changes. Cauliflower rice for white rice, zoodles for pasta, lettuce wraps for tortillas. Take a look at your diet and choose a few easy swaps to try in 2017! Which swaps will you make this year?
Eat Less CRAP
